2016 United Nations Public Service Day

2013 United Nations Public Service Forum, Day and Awards CeremonyThe 2016 United Nations Public Service Day will be celebrated on 23 June at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with a High-level Knowledge Sharing Panel on “Leaving No One Behind: Innovative Institutional Approaches and Public Service Delivery”.

This is the first time that the United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated after the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member States.

The purpose of the event is to recognize public servants’ contribution to sustainable development. It also aims at providing a platform to share ideas, knowledge and innovative practices from around the world on how public institutions can best support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The High Level Knowledge Sharing Panel on “Leaving No One Behind: Innovative Institutional Approaches and Public Service Delivery” is organized by the Permanent Missions of Bolivia and Netherlands to the United Nations along with the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM). It will provide the opportunity to build capacities and exchange of knowledge on (i) policies and strategies to mobilize public institutions for the implementation of the SDGs and (ii) innovative practices and lessons learned on providing services to the vulnerable groups.

The event will be attended by;
 

- The United Nations Secretary-General (via video message),

- the Minister of Defence from Bolivia,
- the Minister of Housing and Central Government Sector from the Netherlands,
- the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs,
- the Minister of State for Investments from the Bahamas,
- the Minister of State Administration from Timor-Leste,
- the Minister of the Interior from the Republic of Korea,
- the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs from Lesotho,
- the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department from Malaysia,
- the CEO of the Centre for Public Service Innovation from South Africa.

The 2016 United Nations Public Service Day will celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community and recognize the work of public servants. It will promote the importance of creativity, innovation and transformation of the public service.

The event is open to representatives of the Permanent Missions of the United Nations, the United Nations agencies, academia and civil society.
