This compendium, prepared by the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), aims to capture emerging trends in digital responses of UN Member States against the COVID-19 pandemic along with other digital government initiatives and provide a preliminary analysis of their main features. These cases are shared for exchange of information so that Member States can learn from each other and possibly create new partnerships.

Milan has developed a software platform that maps data about cables, pipes, and other critical infrastructure that runs beneath the city's streets. This system, which includes seventeen layers of information on the city's subsurface networks, aids in the prevention of accidents, as well as the reduction of delays and site expenses for future excavation and infrastructure projects.
On the surface, the tool also gives information on built and natural ecosystems, allowing local governments to better plan for climate change by making public and private initiatives easier to design and implement.
