Title:
Integrated and coherent national recovery strategies promoting social inclusion, macroeconomic stability, effective governance and protection of the environment for selected small island developing states
About the Project:
Lead by UN DESA (DPIDG, EAPD, DSDG, UNFFS) and in partnership with UNECA, RCOs in the respective Countries, UNCTs, and UNITAR, this project aims to strengthen the capacity of Mauritius, Seychelles, Guinea-Bissau and Jamaica to formulate and implement integrated and coherent national planning and policy that promote social inclusion, macroeconomic stability, effective governance, protection of the environment and mobilizes stakeholders. Based on integrated planning methodologies and the principles of blue and green economy, the focus of the project will be to support the development of economies that are resilient, diversified, and have strengthened productive capacities, with special attention paid to environmental vulnerabilities and resilience-building, including sustainable forest management.
Objective:
The project aims to support the selected small island developing countries (SIDs)-Mauritius, Seychelles, Guinea-Bissau and Jamaica to plan and implement national sustainable development strategies and build up resilience in response to crises. It aims to strengthen selected SIDs government officials' and national stakeholders’ ability to conduct integrated qualitative or quantitative policy and strategy assessments that include valuation of ecosystem services for national planning, pandemic recovery, and achievement of the SDGs.
Specifically, the project will empower the Government of Seychelles, the Government of Mauritius and the Government of Jamaica to improve evidence-based decision-making in the policy planning and implementation process by presenting scenarios and pathways of sustainable development to rebuild economic activities through a participatory/whole of government approach to strengthen institutional coherence to ensure a more equitable and sustainable development. The project will provide support to the Government of Seychelles and Mauritius, to develop a longer-term approach to national sustainable development based on the work previously done, e.g. on blue/ green economy. Moreover, the project will support the Government of Guinea Bissau to develop a longer-term approach for mobilizing climate finance and other resources, supporting nature-based solutions to increased resilience and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, leveraging on the work already accomplished in developing the national forest financing strategy.
Beneficiaries:
Direct beneficiaries include government officials from ministries and governmental institutions at the national and subnational levels. Indirect beneficiaries include citizens and communities in the industries related to the ocean, forestry, finance, etc. in the selected SIDs.
