The United Nations Programme on Public Administration, Finance and Development celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in 2008. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) commemorated the anniversary by, among other things, publishing this book to highlight the broad historical background and path that the programme has gone through since its establishment in 1948 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 246 (III), to the present-day activities of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG). The book cascades through the debate and global trends in public administration as well as the resolutions and decisions of the United Nations that have accompanied the world experts and practitioners in their moving from concepts and practices of "traditional public administration" to those of "good governance", having gone through "public management" and "new public management".
