- What is the WSIS+20 Review?
The WSIS+10 Review in 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of the Summit and provided an opportunity to evaluate the advancements in implementing the WSIS outcomes.Similarly, the WSIS+20 Review in 2025, facilitated by the General Assembly, would assess the progress and challenges over two decades since the inception of WSIS. As we approach the 20th anniversary of WSIS, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive review, to take stock of the achievements and key trends, challenges and opportunities since the Geneva Plan of Action.To facilitate the WSIS+20 review, the following activities have been undertaken, and additional activities will be undertaken:Towards the WSIS+20 review, efforts have been made to establish a unified WSIS+20 review preparatory process involving all UN Agencies, including ITU, UNESCO, UNDP, UNCTAD, UN DESA, and UN CSTD. Regular meetings are organised to facilitate collaborative discussions and planning, reflecting the joint and dedicated approach towards the WSIS+20 review.See the preparatory phases below:
- How will the WSIS+20 review process be conducted? Who will provide leadership, and when is it expected to conclude?
The WSIS+20 review is a United Nations General Assembly-led process, with the Office of the President of the General Assembly and future co-facilitators providing leadership. It will be an inclusive process, with active stakeholder participation, in line with the WSIS tradition of stakeholder engagement. It is expected to conclude during the next General Assembly in 2025.
- How will the WSIS+20 review ensure alignment with broader digital governance and sustainable development goals?
The WSIS+20 review will emphasize coordination among UN agencies and utilize existing mechanisms like the United Nations Group on the Information Society (UNGIS). Key partners, including the CSTD, ITU, UNESCO, and regional commissions, will contribute insights and lessons learned. This collaborative approach aims to align WSIS outcomes with the implementation of the Global Digital Compact and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- What is UN DESA's role in the WSIS+20 review process?
UN DESA will serve as the Secretariat for the WSIS+20 review, continuing its role from the WSIS+10 review in 2015. As Secretariat, UN DESA is committed to ensuring that inputs from a diverse range of stakeholders are fully incorporated, adhering to the multi-stakeholder process mandated by General Assembly Resolution 70/125. Likewise, UN DESA will work closely with UN system partners, including through UNGIS.
