Workshop on Strategic Foresight in Pakistan: “Developing a Vision for Chitral”

Event Date: -
Country: Pakistan
Event Topic: Public Institutions for SDGs

Chitral, characterized by its immense potential and diverse opportunities, serves as a unique and pivotal setting for this strategic foresight and visioning initiative. The driving force behind this initiative is the visible absence of a shared vision among local stakeholders. The aim of this initiative is to formulate a shared vision for local district strategic development planning to achieve resilient economic growth, with an explicit focus on sustainable eco-tourism that harmonizes economic growth with environmental conservation while respecting Chitral's cultural heritage and addresses social inclusion. A shared society's vision serves as the cornerstone for Chitral’s future ambitions given a constrained government revenue compared to developed nations and bulk of resources in the private sector, which urge wider stakeholder engagement for development. These aspirations lay the basis for strategic planning to benefit future generations and strategic foresight can contribute to sustainable economic development which meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (GoKP) invites you to build capacities among and engage local communities to foster a shared vision tailored to Chitral’s challenges and opportunities while getting a good sense of the future trends and unanticipated events. Having a vision for Chitral that is shared and collectively owned is a basis from which a longer-term plan can be developed that sets out what would be the best way to reach that vision.

This workshop is part of a broader initiative that we hereby launch to develop a long-term plan and define priority actions. It is considering the above that we wish to invite you to take part and engage during a workshop that will take place in September 2024 in Chitral to share the vision and discuss the different scenarios that could apply to Chitral.

The objectives of this workshop are as follows:

  1. Develop a shared vision that will inform a development plan in Chitral, emphasizing sustainable
eco-tourism and economic growth with minimal environmental impact, respecting Chitral's
    heritage.
  2. Validate scenarios for possible futures to mitigate risks.
  3. Discuss and validate a roadmap that defines a desired outcome.
