World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

Background

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a unique two-phase United Nations summit that began with the goal of achieving a shared commitment to building a people-centric, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society where everyone can create and share information. The first phase took place in Geneva from 10 to 12 December 2003 and the second phase took place in Tunis, from 16 to 18 November 2005. In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly reviewed the progress over the past ten years and considered the future of the WSIS process beyond 2015. This process, also called WSIS+10 Review, culminated in a High-Level Event on 15-16 December at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) through the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) serves as facilitator for the implementation of and follow-up to the action lines:

Questionnaire for CSTD’s 20 year review

The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It holds an annual intergovernmental forum for discussion on timely and pertinent issues affecting science, technology and development. Since 2006, the Commission has been mandated by ECOSOC to serve as the focal point in the system-wide follow-up to the outcomes of the World Summit on the information Society (WSIS).

The CSTD has now a questionnaire open to all WSIS stakeholders (governments, private sector, civil society, international organizations and relevant regional organizations). Please share your experience, views and priorities in response to a selection of questions, addressing the issues that you consider most important for the CSTD's twenty-year WSIS review.
