As part of its regular budget activities, the Division for Public Economics and Public Administration (DPEPA) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) has undertaken jointly with the Community of Lusophone Countries (CPLP) and the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation (ABC), an activity aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the African Lusophone Countries (ALCs). A seminar was held in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, from 23 to 27 November 1998, to undertake a needs assessment of these countries and identify perspectives of programmes/projects to be formulated and supported by the international community. This seminar was the outcome of fruitful cooperation over the last two years between the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, the World Bank and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to promote capacity-building in the five Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe.
