Autonomous Vehicle Regulatory Sandbox

From 2015 to 2019, the CEREMA implemented a series of sandbox experiments for the testing of innovations, and the definition of legal responsibilities in usage of autonomous vehicles. These sandboxes are designed for different purposes: mainly for shuttles intended for public transportation, but also for autonomous “robot-taxis”, as well as cars aimed for both individuals and on-demand transport. Experiments were performed on short distances (destinations that could be reached by foot), on routes where the use of bigger vehicles has been proven irrelevant. The main purpose was the testing of innovations, and the definition of legal responsibilities in usage of Autonomous vehicles. Some experiments also specifically included accessibility features targeting persons with disabilities.
