This regulatory sandbox is designed to identify regulatory challenges for 5G adoption in Colombia, update the regulatory framework to attend these challenges, promote the offer and demand of apps and services based on 5G technology, and introduce cybersecurity guidelines for 5G adoption. The sandbox has authorized a testing duration of one year, and allows companies and organizations to be part of the pilots. These pilots are developed to obtain preliminary information to facilitate the design and structuring of projects with 5G technology in Colombia. As a result, citizens can access new services and products in different sectors such as health, education, entertainment, industry and tourism that will improve productivity and competitiveness in the regions. Since the start of the first pilot project in September 2020, the 5G technology has been developed, high-speed network and mobile connections has progressed. Unfortunately, until now, no 5G-specific rules have been drafted; however, it is expected that the spectrum action will be defined in the third quarter of 2021 and eventually the 5G network will be up and running in late 2022 or early 2023.
