Monaco Clean Beach was created in 2010 under the initial name of Operation Clean Beaches - the result of a partnership concluded between the Monaco City Hall and the Société Monégasque d'Assainissement (SMA).
In 2012, building on the success of the first years, the Principality's Tourism and Congress Department decided to join the operation.
In 2020, for the 11th consecutive year, this action aimed to educate smokers about maintaining the cleanliness and quality of beaches by offering free ashtrays, thus avoiding cigarette ends in the sand.
This operation is part of the active policy led by the Monaco City Council in favor of the Environment and Sustainable Development.
These ashtrays, in the shape of a cone, are available in self-service on displays placed at each access to Larvotto beach. They can thus be kept for reuse. They are also accessible to people with reduced mobility since they are placed at a suitable height.
