In 2018, EsSalud (Seguro Social de Salud), the Peruvian public health insurance agency signed an agreement with the national Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil (RENIEC) for access to a centralized government online database of birth certificates. EsSalud is the national body responsible for the Peruvian nutrition subsidy program, which provides financial support to new mothers. Previously, mothers had to complete a lengthy application process including in-person visits and extended authorization times to collect the subsidy. After the agreement was signed, the average duration of the application process has been brought down from two months to only 72 hours. Moreover, 60% of babies receive the subsidy in the first week after birth, as compared to only 7% prior to integration.
