Virtual Workshop: Sound Policymaking for Sustainable Development
UN CEPA Principles of Effective Governance

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, through its Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government, held two virtual workshops on Sound Policymaking for Sustainable Development. The first workshop on 16 February focused on 5 African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa and Uganda. The second workshop on 18 February focused on 5 Latin American countries: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. In 2018, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) endorsed eleven principles of effective governance developed by the Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) to enhance governance capabilities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The principles are linked to a number of strategies that operationalize responsive and effective government. The workshops focus on one of the principles: sound policymaking. Eight strategies were set out by CEPA to give effect to this principle which have been developed into policy notes by experts in the field. The workshops discussed some of the strategies developed for sound policymaking and featured perspectives from the field, members of CEPA, and some of the experts that contributed to the drafting of the notes. These events are primarily designed for government officials from agencies and ministries engaged in formulating, implementing and reviewing public policies. Staff of international and regional organizations and non-governmental stakeholders involved in this area were also encouraged to attend.
